Understanding the Difference Between Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift

If you’re unhappy with the way your breasts look or fit in your clothes, it’s important to know you have plenty of options. Many people think of breast augmentation when they consider their options for plastic surgery, but there are actually a few different options available. In fact, one may be better for you than the other – or even a combination approach. Here’s what to know about breast augmentation and breast lift, two popular options performed by your board-certified plastic surgeons, Drs. Kevin Sadati and Whitney Florin.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed each year. It can increase the size and projection of the breast using implants filled with saline or silicone gel. During surgery, the implants are placed using an incision and can last up to 15 years with the right care.

Breast augmentation is best for patients who want larger, fuller breasts because they’re unhappy with the size or profile of their natural breasts. Breast augmentation can also be an effective option for patients who have significant breast asymmetry or who lost considerable breast volume because of weight loss or pregnancy.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also called mastopexy (breast lift), is a procedure where the breasts are restored to a higher, more upright position on the chest. It doesn’t necessarily increase or decrease the size of the breasts (although it’s commonly performed in combination with the respective procedures) but rather gets rid of excess and stretched skin that causes the breasts to sag and point downward. It uses incisions during surgery to reposition the breasts and get rid of excess skin – it can also reposition the nipples if they point downward.

A telltale sign for whether you can benefit from a breast lift is whether your nipples are lower than the natural breast crease, or if they point downward. You can also try placing a pencil underneath the breast – if it stays in place, a breast lift may be beneficial. A breast lift is common for mothers who experienced breast changes during pregnancy or nursing, or women who lost significant weight.

Is a Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation Right For Me?

This can be a difficult choice. Generally, it can be helpful to think in terms of whether you want your breasts to be bigger and fuller. If so, breast augmentation might be right for you. If not, and you simply want your breasts to be more youthful and upright, a breast lift might be right for you. Breast lift along with breast implants can be a powerful combination as well if you want the best of both. Ultimately, it’s best to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss the right procedure for your goals.
