What Are the Different Gynecomastia Surgery Techniques?

Gynecomastia surgery is one of the most effective ways to reduce enlarged male breasts and boost your confidence. If you’re considering pursuing gynecomastia surgery, however, it’s important to know that no two surgeries are alike. There are a few different ways that gynecomastia surgery can be performed, so it’s important to find an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who can create a customized surgical plan for your goals. Here’s what to know about the most common gynecomastia surgery techniques and what to expect.

Liposuction

Gynecomastia is caused by enlarged breast tissue which contains both fatty tissue and breast tissue. Therefore, treatment usually involves liposuction to remove the fatty tissue, along with excision of the breast tissue. Liposuction works by creating a tiny incision and inserting a cannula, or thin tube, attached to a surgical vacuum. The cannula helps break up fatty tissue and remove it from the area. There are a variety of liposuction technologies available that can help remove fat more efficiently and even achieve skin tightening.

Surgical Excision

Surgical excision works similar to the female breast lift and can be a good option in cases where your gynecomastia is caused by enlarged breast tissue. Surgical excision also allows your surgeon to remove excess skin in the setting of weight loss. This can also be an effective option if you want to reduce the size of your areola or reposition your areola if they are too low on your chest. There are a variety of incision patterns that can be used to conceal scarring, so your cosmetic surgeon can recommend the best option for you.

Combination Approach

In most cases, you will benefit from a combination approach to gynecomastia surgery. Since this is the most extensive approach, it can sometimes come with a longer recovery period.

Which One is Right For Me?

It can be difficult to determine the cause of your gynecomastia (and thus the right surgical approach), which means it’s important to partner with a board-certified surgeon. Typically, if your gynecomastia is a result of weight fluctuations and stubborn fat, then liposuction can help. Otherwise, if your gynecomastia is caused by hormone fluctuations and enlarged breast tissue, then surgical excision may be best. It is common to use both techniques for the most comprehensive outcome. Ultimately, the best way to learn more is by meeting with your gynecomastia surgeon.
