Plastic Surgery in a Recession Really?

Plastic Surgery in a Recession in Newport Beach - ReallyIt is no secret that actual cosmetic procedures have been on the decline over the past three years. But, was it because of a recession or something else? After all, this is the 21st Century and isnt plastic surgery so, well80s? Not according to a recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In fact, interest in cosmetic surgery is way up over the past five years.

While it is true that the growth of actual procedures have been in decline it has been because of the recession as opposed to a general poor conception of the industry. Based on a 2010 ASPS survey, both men and women would get some work done if money were not an issue. This is an important distinction because it points toward a general social acceptance of cosmetic surgery.

Here are a few highlights of what the survey revealed:

  • Interest in cosmetic procedures rose 15% from 2009 levels.
  • The option for drastic and invasive surgical procedures included 65% of respondents.
  • Minimally invasive techniques including injectable fillers were up nearly double (99%) over the 2009 survey results.

So, what does it all mean?

The report points to an overall acceptance of plastic surgery as well as an aging populace wishing to drastically change their appearance.

The study included men and women and revealed that both genders are interested in getting some work done. In the minimally invasive category, men led the way in teeth whitening and hair replacement while women tended towards hair removal, cellulite treatment, and transdermal fillers such as Botox. Concerning cosmetic surgical procedures, both men and women showed a high level of interest in tummy tuck, liposuctions, and facelifts.

More than half of women would opt for what is known as a Mommy Makeover. This popular procedure generally includes a tummy tuck coupled with targeted liposuction to shrink an expanding midsection. Anti-aging procedures among the fastest growing demographic, the Baby-Boomers, showed a marked increase. The population ages, more and more candidates wish to slow down the aging process. Studies have shown that not only is plastic surgery having an easier time of it in American society but, also more men and women are opting for procedures that will affect drastic and long lasting changes.
