What Can I Expect After Liposuction Surgery?

Lots of people struggle with excess body fat. Even with diet and exercise, sometimes certain areas just won’t budge. That’s when liposuction can be a good option. But what about after the procedure? What can you expect? What will the results look like? And what will you need to do for the best outcome? Let’s take a look!

Contents

Compression

After the liposuction, you can expect to feel some mild discomfort and see some possible bruising, swelling, and redness. While prescribed medication can help with the discomfort, you will also be given a compression garment to wear. With the garment, the swelling will start to go down within the first week, but you should continue to wear it for up to four weeks after the procedure.

Diet

Following the liposuction procedure, a healthy diet and lots of water are recommended. It will ensure the best healing process and will help you maintain a healthy body weight and keep up the results you see from the surgery.

Since the surgery will likely have you off your feet for a while, you may want to prep meals ahead of time so you have healthy meals with plenty of fruits and veggies to eat when you don’t feel like cooking.

Showering

While you likely won’t be able to shower right after surgery, as long as your doctor okays it, you should be able to shower within 48 hours of the procedure. And when you do show, make sure the water is not too hot or too cold, and keep your shower time to a minimum.

Within the first few days after surgery, you’ll want to keep the compression garment on when you’re standing, but after that, when you shower, you can remove the garment. After showering, pat any incisions dry and carefully put the garment back on.

During those first few days, you’ll also want to have someone there with you when showering in case you lose your balance or faint.

As for soap, you can use a mild soap. Your doctor may even provide a special soap or cleanser to use after surgery.

Sleep

Just like after any surgery, you’ll want to get plenty of rest after liposuction, especially in the first few weeks after the procedure. Sleep is one of the best ways to help the body heal. While sleeping on your back is the best position after surgery, you’ll want to keep your head raised with pillows and elevate your knees to ensure you’re not pulling at any stitches.

Results

You likely won’t see results right after the procedure as there will be some fluid retention and swelling. You’ll have a drain inserted into the incision area to help drain some of the fluid.

But, as the swelling goes down in the weeks after liposuction, you will certainly see results. Depending on how much fat is removed, you’ll likely see the final results in 1-3 months after surgery. View our liposuction results.
