Breast Reduction For Men
“In 2010, 18,000 male patients visited plastic surgeons to correct a condition known as Gynecomastia that results in over-developed breasts in men.” That is a full six percent increase over 2009. While causes vary, they can be traced to hormonal changes, heredity, certain diseases, or the use of prescription medications.
In men, oversized breasts can lead to a lack of self-esteem and depression. In fact, many men who suffer may avoid physical activities and even personal intimacy to hide their condition. Generally, gynecomastia presents with symptoms including excessive localized fat deposits and glandular tissue development. It may also affect both or possibly even one of the breasts.
A thorough physical examination as well as a medical history during the consultation can be helpful in diagnosing gynecomastia apart from other, more expensive medical tests. A biopsy may be necessary in cases where a mass is detected in one or both breasts. If presenting in teenagers, the problem normally does not require treatment and generally dissipates on its own.
If the condition is caused by medicine or disease, discontinuing the medication or treating the disease will clear up the problem. Hormone therapies will be prescribed if the condition can be localized to an imbalance. Sudden and massive weight loss over a short period of time can also lead to oversized breasts, especially once the skin loses elasticity.
Treatment options for gynecomastia involves halting the use of the causative agent if possible, control of weight and may include either conventional or laser assisted liposuction-liposculpture alone or direct excision supplemented with liposuction-liposculpture. Often scars are hidden in the breast folds and around the areola. Basically, the procedure involves removing excess fatty and glandular tissues to reduce the size of the breast. Once the tissue is removed, the underlying muscle is then reconstructed and the skin is pulled taught over the newly constructed area.
Gynecomastia can be a serious medical condition for the male breast. It leads to oversized, female-looking chests and can have severe consequences on the self-esteem and other aspects of mental health. A breast reduction procedure designed specifically to treat this condition can restore a mans outlook and change their outlook for their important relationships.
