Often, it’s not so much the incision lines in a facelift that makes it look good as what’s happening under the incision lines and who decides that. Lee, 65, wanted a deep plane facelift because she felt her face, brow and neck no longer reflected who she was. She didn’t want a different face. She wanted her own.

More than anything, it was where I did my work that made a difference. Rather than pulling on skin, I lifted and repositioned and secured the deeper layers of her face in a vertical direction. She had a preservation deep plane facelift, along with a deep plane neck lift and a brow lift. She was put under twilight sedation rather than general anesthesia with intubation.

But even more important than technique in getting a good result is the surgeon. Someone who has done this thousands of times, who knows all the possible complications of the procedure, who teaches it and writes about it, rather than just having picked up one technique and repeat it for decades. Like still using iPhone 4 where model 16 is available.

That’s something I try to live up to in my preservation deep plane facelift. My research teams at Harvard and I were the first to publish the compression of our technique outcomes with the older techniques in the prestigious Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Journal.

Five months after her surgery, Lee’s brow looked relaxed, not upturned. She had definition in her neck and jaw. And more than anything else, she looked like herself at an age younger than 65.
