Numbness After a Facelift: What Is Normal and What to Expect
Among the most frequently asked questions from patients — both before and after facelift surgery — is about facial numbness. Many patients worry that reduced sensation signals something has gone wrong, or that it will never fully return. Understanding what is normal, what is temporary, and what is rare can provide meaningful reassurance during recovery.

Why Numbness Occurs After Facelift Surgery
Anytime the skin is elevated during a facelift procedure, the small superficial nerves responsible for skin sensation are inevitably disrupted. This is true regardless of whether you have a SMAS facelift or deep plane facelift — any approach that lifts the skin will affect these sensory fibers. Some degree of numbness following a facelift is entirely normal and should be expected as part of the healing process.
How Long Does Numbness Last?
After the tissues settle back into position, the sensory nerves begin to regenerate and re-sprout. This process is gradual but consistent for most patients. Sensation typically begins to return within three months and may continue improving for up to a full year. The vast majority of patients regain most or all of their normal sensation over this time.
Numbness Can Feel Different for Everyone
It is worth noting that reduced sensation does not always present the same way for every patient during recovery. Some people describe tingling sensations, fleeting electric-like pulses, areas of tightness, or shifting patches of numbness. These sensations are actually signs of nerve regeneration in progress — unusual, perhaps, but an encouraging indicator that healing is underway.
When Numbness Persists
In a small number of cases, some degree of numbness may be long-lasting. This can be intermittent or stable over time and is simply one of the known factors that accompanies facelift surgery. Persistent numbness after a facelift is uncommon, but it is important to discuss this possibility during your consultation so you have accurate expectations.
A Note for Male Patients
Men who shave regularly with a razor may find the numbness more noticeable in the early weeks of healing, simply because shaving requires close contact with the skin. Women tend to encounter this aspect of recovery less in their daily routines, though the underlying physiology is identical for all patients.
The most important thing to remember is that post-facelift numbness is a normal part of the process. Trust in your body’s ability to heal, give it the time it needs, and communicate openly with your surgeon throughout your recovery journey.
