What is Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?
Fat transfer to the breasts is a cosmetic procedure for breast augmentation that uses your own liposuctioned fat to modify the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts. Unlike augmentation with breast implants, breast fat transfer can offer permanent results with a minimally invasive procedure. This procedure is an excellent option for women who are hesitant about getting implants or are looking to make only a subtle change to their breast size and fullness.
Who is a Good Candidate for Fat Transfer to Breasts?
Like most other cosmetic procedures, not everyone is a good candidate for fat transfer, or fat grafting, breast enhancement. The best candidates for this procedure usually include:
- People who wish to enhance the size of their breasts
- People who are unable or do not wish to undergo implant surgery
- People who would also benefit from liposuction to get rid of excess fat deposits

The shape of your breasts typically does not change dramatically with a fat transfer procedure. What to Expect During a Fat Transfer Consultation
The first important step in your breast enhancement treatment plan is having a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Tehrani. Along with having a clear idea of your goals, they also encourage patients to bring in pictures of other fat transfer patients that show the results you want to help further illustrate your expectations for the procedure.
During a consultation, Dr. Tehrani will also discuss your physical health and medical history in preparation for your procedure and make note of your aesthetic goals. This can include the size you would like to accomplish, as well as shape and projection. They will also examine the best areas from which to draw fatty tissue for transferring.
Preparing for Fat Transfer to Breasts
Proper preparation is key for ensuring the best results and easiest healing process after a breast fat transfer procedure. Dr. Tehrani will provide detailed instructions for how to prepare for fat grafting, including quitting smoking, adjusting or stopping certain medications, and ensuring you have the care you need for recovery.
The Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Procedure
Your surgery can range from 2 to 4 hours and may vary depending on the amount of fat needed and the number of areas getting liposuction. Dr. Tehrani have developed a gentle technique to liposuction the fat using specialized equipment designed to not traumatize the fat being removed. Although there will be incisions at both at the donor site and in the breasts, they are tiny incisions that usually are barely visible once healed.
This procedure requires IV sedation, which leaves you breathing on your own as you take a deep nap.
Liposuction
As artistic plastic surgeons, Dr. Tehrani bring an eye for beauty and form to your personalized procedure. Each donor area (if more than one) is injected with lidocaine to numb the area, then pinhole incisions are made, and fat cells are liposuctioned using a small cannula.
Common donor areas are the abdomen, hips, thighs, or buttocks (these areas usually have the most excess fat, known as primary fat, that has metabolic resistance to diet and exercise).
Purification
Before fat can be re-injected into the breasts, it must first be separated from other bodily fluids that can be taken up along with fat cells during liposuction. A centrifuge spins the fluid and fat very quickly to separate out the various components according to density. Then the fat is removed and prepared for injection.
Injection
This is the most important part of breast enhancement, as the transferred fat needs to be carefully re-injected to craft a larger, natural breast shape. Dr. Tehrani makes incisions in precise areas of each breast, using a cannula to inject the harvested fat in a gentle, proportional, and symmetrical way.
Not all the fat that we inject will survive. Fat cells are living cells that rely on obtaining a blood supply after being transferred in order to survive. However, the fat that does survive will be there forever! These fat cells will get bigger and smaller with weight gain and weight loss, respectively.
Immediately after your procedure, you will be monitored by our expert medical staff to ensure your procedure is successful and you don’t suffer any ill effects. After 30 minutes, you will be able to return home with care steps to follow during your recovery period. This usually lasts about one or two days, after which you can return to normal, easy tasks. You will need to avoid more strenuous activity, such as engaging your arms and chest for a week or two, according to our instructions.

Your breasts will initially be swollen and may look “over-filled.” following this procedure. As the swelling goes down, the fat tissue will settle into a more natural look.
