What is Kybella?
The active ingredient in this injectable is deoxycholic acid. Just like hyaluronic acid (which is the ingredient in most dermal fillers), deoxycholic acid is found naturally within the body. Once injected into the targeted areas, the deoxycholic acid breaks down the fat cells: Literally dissolving the fat that is located under the chin. Once this fat is dissolved, it is gone for good.
While Kybella has been used outside the United States for decades, it is the first FDA-approved injection of its kind here in America. It was approved by the FDA on April 29, 2015, for the treatment of moderate to severe submental fullness in adults.
Am I A Good Candidate For Kybella?
Kybella injections are approved by the FDA for treating submental fullness (that is due to fat, not glandular swelling or some other medical condition) in individuals who are at least 18 years of age.
Adults who have firm skin below their chin are typically good candidates for Kybella injections to treat a double chin. Prior to considering this treatment for a double chin, our nurses will evaluate a patient’s skin to determine its elasticity.
If the patient has good elasticity, once the treatment is complete and the excess fat dissolves, the skin should shrink back into place.
However, if a patient’s skin has lost its elasticity, our practitioners may recommend additional procedures to assist with shrinking the skin.
A double chin occurs for a variety of reasons, including genetics, weight gain, and aging. Nearly 70 percent of men and women have a double chin. This facial feature can negatively affect an individual’s self-esteem and confidence level.

Your Results With Kybella
For the first 24 hours after treatment, individuals need to avoid strenuous activities. Other than that, no special care is necessary. Most patients do experience bruising and/or swelling following treatment. Women who would like to hide any bruising or inflammation that results can usually do so by wearing a scarf. Patients may also experience a firmness, redness, numbness and or tenderness in the areas that were treated.
The results attained with Kybella will not be evident immediately. However, the results achieved are permanent: that is unless the patient gains weight or the skin in the area beneath the chin becomes lax.
All injections carry some type of risk and having an inexperienced injector increases the likelihood of a complication. When it comes to Kybella, injecting at the proper depth is crucial from both a safety perspective as well as the effectiveness of the treatment.
